Adelaide's Lily Is About to Bloom!!

Dear Lovely ones,

To say I'm a proud South Aussie is an understatement.  Ever since I moved over the border, so much has changed for the better for me. This Podcast I'm sending you to, and its creator Steve Davis, helped me to settle in to my new life here in Adelaide. There have been so many musical possibilities since then, including the recording and releasing of my song about Port Adelaide, TOUGH AS GERANIUM, which is included in this week's podcast.  I'd love if you would drop by the link below and have a listen, and then make The Adelaide Show your number 1 podcast where ever you ar
Artwork for single cover - Tough As Geranium by Susan Lily

The song can be heard and purchased online at
iTunes or Bandcamp

I find out next tuesday night if I am an award winner in Tamworth (it would be my first Tamworth award) and will scream from the rooftops if I do. Have a great day all and thanks for your support xx

Locals Supporting Locals - ichooseSA

Dear Lovely ones,

December started with a BANG! musically.  I was fortunate to perform in two great events yesterday. The first was GINCIDENT, down at Harts Mill with a couple of the Beach House Boys (Mark and Pete).  We did a fun 45 minute set of my songs and and selected covers: including a rousing rendition of WHAT SHALL WE DO WITH A DRUNKEN SAILOR... which went well with the crowd.  It was a fun afternoon of music, food and Gin tasting by all.

Here are the small businesses I supported on the day:

Decadent doughnuts....yummmm from Cherry Darlings

I had a fabulous iced coffee from Mischief Brew to go with the doughnut :)

if that wasn't fun enough, I also ended up playing a set with the Gov's Variety Show down at Adelaide's own Governor Hindmarsh in the front bar.

If you've never been to Adelaide's ONLY live variety show just know it's on every 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month in the front bar of the Gov.  This variety includes music artists, comedians, magicians, dancers... in fact, sometimes you will be surprised by the acts on.  The shows are free however if people donate a bit as they come through then the artists will get a little something.
The great thing about this show is that it is very supportive to innovative and new material.  it's a chance for audiences to hear and see for the first time, an artist's new material.

One of the great things that these events showcase is local talents.  Whether it be the food and beverage businesses or artists and  agencies that reside here in SA, events like these rally to showcase and support everyday people who dream big.  Let's keep on supporting local; it's our neighbourhood we are keeping alive.  This in turn keeps the greater wheels of our society turning.

Thank you all so much for supporting me and other small businesses!

love

Susan

Mantra Studio Kitchen and Bar - 14.10.18

Dear Lovely Ones,

If you ever find yourself in Yarraville, Victoria, please drop into 10a Campbell street.  You will understand more what a beautiful place Mantra is before you even walk through the doors.

the magic continues when you do enter.  Greeted by fabulous staff and a great environment, you cannot help but feel instantly at home.  They have catered for children in a way I've not seen before and so it's a real family affair each time you turn around.

I was lucky enough to book in and play an afternoon on 14th October, 2018.
One of the best parts was seeing the lovely faces of friends I used to hang out with when I lived in Melbourne.  It was a reunion and a great afternoon of music with banter in between that gave us all a giggle and a guffaw.  I made a few new fans as well with random guests who arrived and then stayed to hear my tales of life.

The place is run and owned by two fabulous individuals who also make up the duo The Long and The Short of It.  Patsy and David are the most generous hosts who will often be found mucking in with their crew to ensure that customers are serviced and the staff feel supported.

As an artist I felt very loved, looked after and appreciated.  I wish there were more placed like Mantra Studio Kitchen and Bar, and I'm very glad we at least have one venue like this.

It's a special place run by equally special people.
Have yourself a merry little party in either upstairs or in their private room.
Go see live music that is free on a sunday!
Support a local business that puts PEOPLE first!!

Can't thank Patsy and David enough for giving me a most gorgeous space to sing my tunes and entertain my friends.

love Susan xx

PS.  look at these desserts!!!!

PPS.  they even had lillies in the vase....was it just for me??? ;)

August Update

Dear Lovely Ones,

Recently I was the recipient of some media attention through the recent song I released, TOUGH AS GERANIUM.

Firstly, I was given a time to go and play live on Peter Goers' show on ABC Radio Adelaide and have a quick chat.

Here is the link to the Facebook live footage taken that night:
ABC Radio Adelaide - Peter Goers' show

On twitter I was contacted by a journalist from the Advertiser about the same song and ended up on the front page of the Port Adelaide Messenger...though you need a subscriber login to read it online... so I will scan the paper in once I get a copy this week.

In more news, I am playing a special show next Saturday at the DOCKSIDE TAVERN in Lipson street, PORT ADELAIDE.  I am the second artist to be booked for "Dockside Conversations", which is a mix of original tunes and the stories behind them.

It should be a fun night, so book yourself a table and come armed with questions you may wish me to answer!

One more thing!  I am a nominee in the People's Choice Awards for MOST POPULAR COUNTRY ARTIST for the SA Music Awards in 2018.  It's my first time in these awards and I would be grateful for your vote (plus if you want to share the link around that would be fabbo too!)

Then scroll down to the country music section.

the best thing is you don't have to vote for anyone else in any other category unless you wish it.

thanks for taking the time to read this update and have a great start to the working week!

love

Susan xx

The Butterfly is Blossoming

Dear Lovely Ones,

It was 6 years ago today that I excitedly experienced my first album launch.  Held at Hardimans Hotel in Kensington, I had a wonderful time with so many gorgeous folk.  Some are still my friends and others I often think of fondly whenever I take an album out or someone requests a song of mine on radio.

This album took a while to become a finished project too.  A labour of love, it took 2 years to be finished.  During that time I learnt much about songwriting, recording and leading a band: all things that were mentored by a fabulous guy and my producer Paul Norton. We worked diligently whenever we could in his studio, and I gained more than I paid for I believe.  I will always be thankful and grateful for the guidance Paul and his gorgeous wife, Wendy Stapleton, gave me.  They are truly generous people who gave me so much and continue to inspire me whenever I find myself with a newly finished song or do a great show.

I had the BEST time that night.  My dad came down to be there with me and I'm so grateful he did.  He loved every minute of it.  I had a great bunch of musicians around me and I also had a surprise visitor who almost knocked me off my high heels.  That was a beautiful moment I will always treasure.  Seeing the smiling face of a man I treasured as a friend and now treasure in my life was the biggest and best surprise of the launch (even though I didn't realise then where I would be now).

Me at my album launch

Today is also the birthday of my favourite twins and a mate from home.  What a fabulous date to have in my life!

Happy sunday everyone xxx

Thank You Captain Brian and Vale MV Port Princess

Dear Lovely Ones,

A career so fortunate always has so many to thank,  and no matter what stage you are in there is always time to do so.  Tragically, I am doing this after a most awful event these past 24 hours.  For those who have been on the Port River Princess, it's been a great way to relax and see the Dolphins up and down the Port River.  Captain Brian and Tammy, plus their wonderful team, carried out each trip as enthusiastically as if it was their first one ever.  I was very fortunate to not only play a number of shows on the top deck, but also to be a passenger on a lunchtime cruise where we got to see Dolphins playing with the tug boats up and down the river.

A very proud Captain is Brian, and I loved the excitement in his voice over the PA when he sited a Dolphin for us.  Great memories and musical moments on board.

Below is the acoustic set up for our gigs we did for the riverboat and Platinum Event Agency

Sadly the vessel sank last night, on its way to a new home in Victoria.  Thank goodness Captain Brian and crew are safe but I feel that emotions will be running high at the moment.  Perhaps the old girl didn't want to move to a new home.  Maybe she felt her time was up.  We will never know, but I know that I am so glad I got to experience her beauty on the water.

I had THE BEST time when I played the 4 shows on here.  Beautiful river, great vessel and crew and wonderful passengers too.  I am very sad that the vessel is gone, yet I'm so grateful that I was fortunate enough to take my music on board.  Many thanks to Captain Brian and team and I hope we will all catch up one day soon.

lots of love

Thank You Adelaide! Butterfly: When Country Meets City OPENS!

Hi Lovely ones,

On Friday 24th and Saturday 25th February I performed my very first Adelaide Fringe show "Butterfly: When Country Meets City" at Fedora's Restaurant in the Hilton Hotel on South Road.  What a brilliant two nights we had, with warm lovely crowds who lifted my spirits as much as I hoped I would lift theirs.

As a child I dreamt of being a sought after singer and entertainer and, inspired by the memory of my Pop I am now doing what I truly love.  My show is a mix of comedy and music, taking me back to the heady days of being a standup comic.  After an 11 year break from standup it's felt great to weave my personal story into a show that gives joy and laughter to my audiences.

So, if you are wondering what to see during the Adelaide Fringe then take a chance and come and see mine.  We have something for everyone: music, comedy, food, table service, great hotel.

I have one more show on 11th March and the tickets are moving already.  To book your tickets please go to the #adlfringe website or click on the link in the title above.  I'm so overjoyed to be opening myself to new experiences and taking my darling audiences on a wonderful journey of discovery.  I can't thank people enough for coming along.

lots of love

Semaphore Music Festival - Susan Lily with Band!

Hi lovely ones,

It's almost that time again, when the Semaphore Foreshore is doned with a stage and decorated with lights and music to entertain one and all.  This year is special for me in so many ways.  It's my second time playing at this festival, I'm also now playing on the main stage with my backing band and, 2016 marks the tenth year since I released my first single and became a recording artist.  Whew!  What a decade!

Tickets for this fabulous 3 day event can be purchased from The Semaphore Music Festival Website.

So you will get a full day of music each day for only $10.10 per day!

Imagine that!!!

I will be on stage with my backing band at 3 pm and if you've not seen us play together then now is a great time to do so!

We would all love to see you there, supporting local and interstate original music.

lots of love

So Many Moments

I've just got home from a gig that began as so many have; getting there on time for soundcheck, meeting the other musicians and getting "into the zone".  However, I am so chuffed about how the night went. I feel like I've passed another inivisible hurdle to "step up" and smash my PB (and I don't mean peanut butter as I like mine crunchy) for performing.  It was such an enjoyable night with a cameraderie that made its way to the walls and behind the bar (the staff said they really enjoyed the night too).

A real family affair twas this launch for a truly beautiful and talented local artist and here was I, an invited party to help celebrate the event.  It was a chance spotting of a post on FB (by my gorgeous man) that lead me to becoming part of the Samantha Edge album launch for "Moments".  So many moments indeed.

First there was the celtic trio called Telenn Tri who opened the night with essences of time gone by mixed with contemporary feel.  Made up of Violin, Harp, and guitar or piano accordion this trio delighted us with joyous melodies and heartfelt originals.

After a short break I got up to do my bit and suddenly it all felt rather magical.  Perhaps it was the total attention the room had given to my predecessors and was now giving to me.  Maybe it had something to do with my recent successes in Tamworth at the CMF.  Was I channeling my grandad?  Was he with me now?   Pop was a gifted musician who had no lessons and simply "felt" music.  I do too.  Sometimes it frustrates other musicians when I can't explain something or count them in... but I do feel music takes me over and I ride the tide of its rhythms til my songs are finished.

Anyway, I digress.  I changed my songlist to cater for one of the gorgeous ladies I'd met earlier and found myself singing "Butterfly" like I've never done before.  I felt I'd reached that moment when dynamics ruled me rather than the other way.  It felt good, right, and I  went with it all.

My impact, I found out later, was profound and very positive.  As far as I'm concerned tonight was almost the night to end all nights.  If I don't wake up tomorrow this is a testament to me being a very happy and fulfilled gal.

The magic continued well after my spotlight moment.  I sat down to relax and listen to Samantha do her launch sets and found myself swept into another world.  Each song was more than heartfelt, divine in its own creation and reminded me of my own journey.  One of the things I've grown to love about Samantha is her ability to share, even the saddest, stories in a way that makes you believe there is much hope to be had.  I'm so glad she did two sets; one would have had me begging for more.

I do hope you go and have a listen to her album "Moments".  I've got my copy and you can find yours if you take the time to visit her website (which is linked to her name at the top).  To those who have not yet seen this gifted Adelaidian, please find her on social media and go see her live!!!  You will awaken to a whole new world when you see Samantha Edge in concert.

I'm off to bed now to dream about my next gig with Samantha.  I reckon it's gonna be a cracker! I'm so very grateful I made contact and got to share a stage with another wonderful music artist.

love to all

Sooz!

Semaphore Songs Project - Semaphore Music Festival 2015

My involvement in the Semaphore Songs Project for 2015 began with a minor degree of disaster and ended with one the most beautiful afternoons with family and friends at the RSL in Semaphore rd.  I'd decided to compose something about Port Adelaide; partly because the place resonated with me greatly.  With very little pre-conception of the place I found a beauty and a link between the heritage area and the humble geranium I saw growing cheerfully in various streets.  To me it felt like there was a resilience, tenacity, endurance and toughness shared by both parties.  It became very obvious to me, after losing all my recordings by accident, that these two were very much more entwined that just geographically.

I also chose a waltz rhythm for the song, so as to bring a little history in as well.  With John Baker's guidance (mentor) I was able to weave a little of my own life into the song as well.  Out home where I was born often the only plant that grew in the harsh conditions was the humble geranium.  It seems to revel in hardship and withstands a great deal from the extremes of nature.

Can you see how much Port Adelaide and the geraniums here want you to come visit?

So, here are the lyrics to the song:

Tough As Geranium

See the colourful geranium
living there on the street
humble, in its earthiness
like a sailor song, so sweet

On the streets of Port Adelaide
Where once lived a bustling trade
Though it's gone, I feel it around me
History, it surrounds me
And I hear

Where are you going?
Hey don't walk on by
Did somebody tell you
That I have died
Just like the geranium, I will survive
I'm tough as geranium

There's five lovely petals, on each little flower
That remind me of times, with my grandmother
On the rough dusty plains, in outback Australia
In hardship and drought, we all stuck together

Just like the flower, it's vibrant to see
The buildings stand tall, with dignity
I just wish that old reputation could be
Banished forever, tipped over the quay.
so we ask

Where are you going?
Hey don't walk on by
Did somebody tell you
That I have died
Just like the geranium, I will survive
I'm tough as geranium

Where are you going?
Hey don't walk on by
Did somebody tell you
That I have died
Just like the geranium, I will survive
I'm tough as geranium

Tough as geranium
I will survive, cos I'm tough as geranium

Musical Bliss - Cat Bird Dog album review

You know those moments when you want to listen to music and regain some of your better self?  I've found it today in some new music I picked up last night.  Local artists, who quipped on stage something akin to if nothing else we might like the artwork, have me riding a happy train right now.  Who are these people you ask?   Sheesh, I really shouldn't tell you.  I should keep this wonderful collection of vibrations to myself but I won't, cos I love to share.

The album is called "Headfirst into The Riddle" and is from the pens and hearts of "Cat Dog Bird".  The essence of this group are Jen Lush and Andy Voigt, two lovely people I met very recently through SCALA FOOM.  The combination of Andy's effortless guitar playing mixes well with the lushness of Jen's voice. When I listen to Jen sing I hear rainbows and I could, probably will, play this album over and over again today.  Andy and Jen are a perfect musical match both on stage and in the studio.  This album gives me just as much at home as they both do live and I can't wait to see a full show from them both.  I'm also hoping that one day I will be on the same bill with Jen and Andy.  How beautiful would that be :)

If you're not doing anything thursday 4th September please come join us at The Jade Monkey, Flinders street, Adelaide.  It's the final of FOOM 2014 LIVE and Cat Dog Bird will be showcasing a song.  Come along anyway, and you may find a new artist or sound that grabs you to the point where you will keep on seeing live music and purchasing local music.

If you can't get there please keep your eyes and ears out for this group both live and on the web.  Grab a copy of the album and know that you are giving yourself a gift that will definitely continue to grow on you.

Ps. I also like the artwork :)

The Astor Hotel

When I walked into the Astor that very first time it felt like a pub. Now when I walk in here I feel like I'm home. It's that sort of place really, somewhere you can be yourself and be embraced for your uniqueness.

Another thing that is truly special is the number of original acts who play there. From the talented weekend musos to the booked artists for the weekly open mic there's so many stories and beauty for your ears.  Open mic can be "hit and miss" but not here. I vouch there's not one act who won't have you wishing for more.

So, if you live in Adelaide or visit, make sure you drop in to sup on great music and sumptuous food. The staff are helpful and friendly and so are those who frequent the hotel as "locaks".  Drop in, tell them Susan Lily sent you.
